Create a website: Tips for Bringing your Business Online

Having your website made can be a long and sometimes difficult process, but the rewards are worth the effort. If you want to create a website for a business, it can increase your exposure and possibly your customer base. Here are some things you’ll want to think about, however:

1.Establish the purpose of your site. What do you intend your site to do for your business? Is it a simple FAQ about your company? Or will it be more complicated, where your customers can make orders, transact online, or give you customer feedback? Listing your objectives will let you (or your programmer) know what functions are best suited for your site.

2. Don’t put too much information in one page. Some people might still think of websites the way they think of space in a newspaper ad: they paid for the space, so they want to put as much information in it as possible to make their investment worthwhile. But also consider that your average user loses interest after reading only a few lines of text. A solid block of text, or long paragraphs that require the user to scroll down to read, will virtually guarantee that your information won’t be read.

So to create a website that’ll be effective, keep your layout clean, and simple. Put only the information that your clients need to know - your services, maybe a testimonial or two, and contact information. Organize this information into pages, and make separate sections for each. This will keep each page clean, and contain only the information pertinent to your clients’ needs.

3.Readability is the key. As much as you’d like to use loud colors or huge fonts, the Internet is not a shouting competition. Being loud, visually, only annoys many users, and gives them a bad first impression when they enter your site. Keep your colors tasteful- reading on a monitor already places enough of a strain on the eyes, without your use of wild colors or big letters splashed across the page.

4. Finally, update your site as much as you can. If you work in an industry that has trends, like say, real estate, or cars, then you want to have only the most recent information there to show that your business is up-to-date. If you intend to create a website that will be updated often, you’ll want to look into a dynamic site with a content management system. If your site only contains your company information and contact information, then a simpler, static website will do the job.

An effective website for your business can be a good investment for both your time and money. But to be effective, you just have to remember when you create a website: it’s all about presentation. Your average user will have a short attention span, so make sure that you present your information in an orderly, concise manner. If you keep it visually interesting but don’t go overboard, users will be more likely to stick around and find out more about your company.
